Telesoftware is the broadcasting of programs for home computers via Teletext. This simple but powerful concept was pioneered in the UK during the 1970s and early 80s. During that time, software was broadcast at various times on all of the (then) four terrestrial TV channels. Telesoftware was available on the BBC Microcomputer as well as several other computers via adapters and set-top boxes.
Although none of the early Telesoftware initiatives survived, many of the techniques are now at the heart of the latest digital television systems.
Surelink’s founder, John Hedger, was closely involved in the early development of Telesoftware, and while with ORACLE, was responsible for the joint ITCA/Mullard project to design and build the first experimental Telesoftware receiver. He was also a member of the Steering Committee for Brighton Polytechnic’s “Telesoftware and Secondary Education” project .
John Hedger published a number of articles and technical papers on Telesoftware. He also demonstrated the system widely, both in the UK and USA. Abridged version of two of the articles are available below. Although the text is reproduced in full, at present it has not been possible to reproduce the diagrams. We hope to resolve this shortly.
“Telesoftware: Using Teletext to support a home computer”, IEE article, 1978
“Telesoftware: Home Computing via Broadcast Teletext”, IEEE article, 1979
